Abstract

This research examines the capacity and potential of Pakistan’s ceramic tile industry, emphasizing its role in architectural applications and cultural heritage. Ceramic tiles, historically significant as both decorative art and carriers of cultural memory, have evolved over millennia—from early ceremonial figurines to sophisticated glazed products integral to Islamic architecture. In Pakistan, particularly in Punjab, cities like Faisalabad, Gujrat, and Gujranwala, carry the tradition persisting through clusters of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that contribute substantially to local economies. Using a case study of a medium and large-scale Faisalabad firm and the research documents the tile manufacturing process through qualitative observation. Findings highlight the sector’s adaptive capabilities, reliance on local resources, potential for modernization despite challenges such as high production costs and energy supply limitations. The study concludes that future growth depends on adopting and developing distinctive design and market niches to strengthen the industry’s domestic and international presence.
